Pro Tips to Having a Successful Garage Sale

Garage Sale

If you are planning to have a successful garage sale, here are the some useful tips to follow. I’ve had a number of successful garage sales over the years and here are my top 10 tips for having a successful sale:

Collect your things and save

It is always good to kick off the garage sale with good preparation. Collect your things all year and put on the garage sale with a collection of things. When you plan to collect things make sure they are in the good condition to be sold at a reasonable rate. Heavily worn items typically do not sell well. Make sure the things you sell are in good condition and not too worn.

Work with a plan

Hosting a garage sale might seem like an easy thing, but a proper planning is required to make the most of it. When it’s getting close to time for your garage sale, make sure you have already priced all the items and advertised them. Hand out flyers and put up signs around your neighborhood (HOA permitting) to build awareness for your sale. Neighborhood facebook groups are also a great way to get the word out.

Organize your work

Work with a proper schedule and a system in order to sell things at a good impression. If you are planning to sell clothes then make sure you have arranged the clothing rack in order to display them well. You can only drive more customers if you have laid a good impression on them about how you conduct your garage sale.

Work with a team

You can never run a one man show for the garage sale, so it is always best to team up to run things effectively and efficiently. You can team up with your family members or your friends, you will not only enjoy the time, but you can probably learn something new about your close acquaintances- perhaps hidden management skills. Before the big day, set up the team, distribute responsibilities and make sure you all work as one unit. By teaming up you can do a lot of work in the shortest of time. A good team not only brings good business but also adds more fun to the working environment.

Season

It is not a good idea to plan the garage sale on a chilly winter day or on a scorcher in the middle of the summer. Be very cautious about the weather and be sure to check the weather forecast as far in advance as you can. If you see there is rain expected, then it is better to delay the plan rather seeing your efforts all ruined up in the rainwater.

When all’s said and done, it’s just a garage sale. Make it fun for your neighbors and everyone who’s involved! Play music! Encourage some of the kids to set up a lemonade stand. As well as helping you get rid of some unnecessary clutter, this can be an opportunity to engage better with your community. Keep it light-hearted and everything will play out great!
